ANGRA + Operation Mindcrime + Halcyon Way + Avelion @ Le Forum Vauréal ( 95 ) – 24/03/2018

This Saturday, March 24, in the freshness of spring (and this is  also my Birthday), I am at the Forum Vauréal (95) for the show of ANGRA. The Brazilian band – whose singer is our dear Fabio LIONE whom I saw a few weeks ago with RHAPSODY – came to present us his new opus: OMNI.

The room announces a Sold Out for this Saturday, fans have responded once again. Three first support acts are on the program: OPERATION MINDCRIME with the legendary Geoff TATE (ex QUEENSRYCHE), preceded by HALCYON WAY (USA) and AVELION (Italy). The evening promises to be fantastic for the fans that came in droves to sing and listen to Brazilian virtuosos.

The hall fills up quickly with a horde of fans. Once inside, I discover a giant screen on the side of the room, allowing people at the back of the room or the bar to fully enjoy what is happening on stage, a very good idea. Luckily, there is also a photo pit, which is pleasant for photographers.

I settle down and the Italian band AVELION sets up. After a timid beginning, the audience and I were quickly conquered and we began to sing together under the guidance of the charismatic singer William VERDERI. He’s supported by Oreste GIACOMINI‘s keyboard, Leonardo FREGGI’s guitar, Danilo ARISI’s bass and Alessandro PONZI’s drums.

The tracks follow one after another, allowing us to discover a melodic and progressive sound, sometimes combined with an electro background. It was nice for a first part, William’s enthusiasm helped to warm the audience.

SETLIST

  1. Fading Out
  2. Burst Inside
  3. Echoes And Fragrance
  4. Waste My Time
  5. Never Wanted
  6. Derailed Trails of Life
  7. Falling Down

The American band HALCYON WAY is now installed, with obviously some technical problems to be solved before starting his set … The singer Steve BRAUN, in great condition, arrives on the stage with his acolytes Ernie TOPRAN (drums), Jon BODAN ( lead guitar) and its red crest, Max EVE (guitar and backing vocals) and Skyler MOORE (bass).

The room is now white-hot.. During the whole show Steve has not stopped smiling, present for the photos while ensuring the show: a charisma at the top. It becomes muscle (the music is a little too strong) for the greatest pleasure of the fans and the public: the group delivers good progressive metal, a mix of Heavy and Hard Rock accompanied by a alternation of clear voice and good growl. Alchemy is felt among the members of the group

A little anecdote of the evening: Steve sings with a thermos of tea in his hand, for his voice I think.  Such a ray of sunshine with his blond hair, his catchy smile and his game of charming looks.  It was a good time for everyone.

SETLIST:

  1. Intro/Bloody but Unbowed

  3. Hatred is My Cause
  4. Save Your Tears

It’s time now to welcome OPERATION MINDCRIME.  Upon arrival, the fans respond and the show begins with the famous intro of I Remember Now, the story of a serial killer junkie. With his atypical look, Geoff Tate makes impressive octaves that give the goosebumps. Fans know the chorus by heart, and are mesmerized, attracted to the stage by catchy tunes: I Do not Believe in Love, Speak and many more …

The riffs by Kelly Gray and Scott Moughton make us have a good time,  much closer to the rock than the technical metal,. The atmosphere is warm thanks to the many fans of Geoff’s band, which has been raging for over thirty years! The show ends, it was a beautiful discovery for me.

  1. I Remember Now

After an endless time of setting up, it is time to welcome the headliner of the evening: ANGRA! Acclaimed by fans of the Brazilian band, the musicians enter the scene one after the other with finally our dear and talented songwriter Fabio LIONE, who was recently at Trabendo for RHAPSODY’s farewell (and 20th anniversary) tour.

The band presents its album OMNI, released in February, written by the guitarist and founder of the band Raphael BITTENCOURT. The first title is Travelers of time, from the last album. He already unleashes the fans, some of whom come from as far as South America! The setlist makes us travel in all their discography.

Fabio is now singing the Time song that takes us back to 1993, for the album Angel Cry. His voice is heard throughout the Forum room, he jumps over the photo pit to mingle with the public, the fans are excited and sing with full lungs with the Italian singer. The phones are out to immortalize these exceptional moments!

ANGRA is a group of virtuoso musicians, in perfect symbiosis. A performance without any wrong note literally as well as figuratively. The demonic riffs played in unison and supported by the 6-string bass of Felipe ANDREOLI succeed to the inspired and high-flying solos of guitarists Marcelo BARBOSA and Raphael BITTENCOURT. The harmonies are rich, open, the music alternates between melodic and aggressive.

At the end of the concert, the drummer’s solo shows us that there was a change with the young Bruno VALVERDE. Impressive: the jazz drum technique sublimates a musicality and speed that makes the room dizzy.

Not to forget the keyboard Bruno SA, who has energetically assured both  concerts  of OPERATION MINDCRIME and ANGRA!

For the encores, maestro BITTENCOURT takes a classical guitar for a moment of sweetness that will soon be prolonged by a monstrous carry-on (that everyone was waiting impatiently).

Despite some small technical sound issues, the concert was perfectly executed. Fabio and the musicians of the group have held out all the way. The public is happy with this evening which made us travel with emotion.

    (Vangelis song)

A very good evening with 4 groups who did the job !!!!

Thanks to Aurélie, Le Forum de Vauréal, the bands, and Fabio LIONE for this fantastic concert, a memorable Birthday.

The title « Insania » of Angra:

SETLIST:

  1. Fading Out
  2. Burst Inside
  3. Echoes And Fragrance
  4. Waste My Time
  5. Never Wanted
  6. Derailed Trails of Life
  7. Falling Down

SETLIST:

  1. Intro/Bloody but Unbowed
  2. Eviserate the Morning Sun
  3. Hatred is My Cause
  4. Save Your Tears
  5. Blame
  6. Desecration Day
  7. 10,000 Ways
  8. Home

SETLIST:

  1. I Remember Now
  2. Anarchy-X
  3. Revolution Calling
  4. Operation: Mindcrime
  5. Speak
  6. Spreading the Disease
  7. The Mission
  8. The Needle Lies
  9. Breaking the Silence
  10. I Don’t Believe in Love
  11. Waiting for 22
  12. Eyes of a Stranger

SETLIST:

  1. Dr. Tyrell’s Death
    (Vangelis song)
  2. Travelers of Time
  3. Nothing to Say

  5. Newborn Me
  6. Time
  7. Acid Rain
  8. Final Light
  9. Insania
  10. Drum Solo
  11. Lisbon
  12. Magic Mirror
    Encore:
  13. Rebirth
  14. Carry On / Nova Era
